The ability to add children to synonyms is really critical for managing our collection. There are literally thousands of genera in our Taxon tree that are synonyms but not all the species have been added already. If we want to add those species (as synonyms), then we don’t want to have to desynonymise the genus first and then resynonymise it. We also want to be able to synonymise a parent without having to synonymise all the children since we often don’t know what the accepted taxa are for all the children. It sometimes takes more time to figure that out from the literature, especially with names that have not been included in a revision. Can the synonymy rules for the tree be relaxed?

Starting in Specify 7.8.4, there is a secret preference that allows synonymizing a node with children and adding children to a synonymized node. The children are not automatically synonymized themselves.

Does this preference not solve your issue described above?
Are you looking to keep the full name the same for the children of the newly synonymized Genus?
