How to Update Your RSS Feed :rss_:

Read First

This tutorial shows how to update your RSS feed from within Specify 7.

To do this successfully, you first must have the following app resources configured:

  • ExportFeed
  • DwCA export mapping
  • DwCA export metadata

You can view our Specify 7 Webinar [29:29] on configuring these, our written documentation for setting up DwCA exporting and others, and our technical documentation of these resources on our GitHub.

If you have not configured this, you will see this message in the failure notificaiton: (“"traceback":null}”
This indicates that you need to still complete the setup before exporting.

If you have used the RSS exporting before or it has been configured by the Specify Collections Consortium team, you can proceed.

Members can contact support@specifysoftware.org for assistance in establishing these as well.

Export Steps

Step 1: Click on your username in the navigation menu.

Step 2: Click on :rss_: Update RSS Feed

Next click Update.

You can safely close this dialog. It usually can take up to 5 minutes to complete the update. This take longer depending on the size of your data set.

Step 3: Once you see the :bell_: Notifications navigation menu item become orange, select it.

Step 4: You should now see the name of the RSS feed item that you can share with data aggregators such as iDigBio or GBIF.

You can click on the button named after your export mapping (in this case, kuit-dwca.zip) to download a copy of your export.

Export feed endpoint

When a valid ExportFeed resource is present at the Global Resources app resource level, the RSS feed URL will become active and return the generated RSS feed:

https://ichthyology.specify.ku.edu/export/rss/

Replace ichthyology.specify.ku.edu with your base URL.

This URL can be sent to the data aggregator so that they can regularly update your data from that link. It is static, meaning that it will always remain the same and have the most recent export’s data.

Output:

The data contained in this file is only for educational purposes, not representative of actual KU Ichthyology data.
