Synonym Placeholder

Hello, we have in our taxonomic trees a “taxon” labeled as synonym placeholder. We don’t know where it came from and it holds a lot of synonymized taxa that should be in different locations. Is there a way to either move the synonymized taxa to their proper locations or to delete them without doing it one at a time? There are thousands of them.

Thanks,
Ashley

Hi @fergashl,

Specify does not automatically create “Synonym Placeholder” nodes, as the WorkBench has not previously supported uploading synonyms and does not do so at this time.

Is it possible that these placeholders originated from a bulk upload that never replaced them? Would you like us to remove these placeholders if there are no linked taxon names?

Hi Grant,

I suppose that is possible, but if that was the case it was probably done on a different version of Specify. Could we have them deleted please? It makes it look like we have way more taxa than we actually do and makes queries bulky.

Thanks!

Hi @fergashl,

We’ll go ahead and remove these taxon nodes once the 7.10.2 update arrives on your instance next week!

Awesome, thank you so much!

Hi @fergashl,

I removed all “Synonym Placeholder” nodes and their children from each of these discipline trees:

Taxon Tree Collections
Invertebrate Zoology Invertebrates
Paleontology Fossil Invertebrates, Fossil Plants, Fossil Vertebrates
Botany Botany
Vertebrate Zoology Herpetology, Mammalogy, Ichthyology, Ornithology

Thank you Grant! With the new update, do we also have the new Geology container feature available as well?

Hi @fergashl,

Yes, Collection Object Groups are now available following the update! You will need to update your data entry forms to include this feature, or we can add it for you!

Yay! Could you add it to our paleo collections for us? I would be in your debt!

Hi @fergashl,

One of our support staff has added Collection Object Groups to those collections! Send us a message if you have any questions!

Thank you so much!
