Workshop Options for SPNHC 2025 in Lawrence, KS

Happy New Year, everyone! :tada:
I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday.

As we kick off our planning for this year’s SPNHC activities (May 27-31 in Lawrence, KS), we are exploring the possibility of hosting a workshop for our consortium members and the broader community. To help us gauge interest, we’d love your feedback on a couple of options:

  1. A Two-Day Workshop: This would take place after the SPNHC conference concludes.
  2. A Half-Day or Full-Day Workshop: This could be integrated into the SPNHC activities on May 31st, during the conference’s workshop day.

You can respond to this post or email us at membership@specifysoftware.org to indicate your interest and preferred duration for the workshop.

Thank you all!

My colleague Zsuzsanna and I are planning to come to the SPNHC meeting in Kansas and would love to join your workshop(s) and meet you all. I will think a bit more about what format I’d personally prefer, but at least a full day if not two.

Hi again. We were looking at this for applying funding (deadline January 20th). For the fund application we need to have a clearer idea what date range our presence would be required for, if we want to attend the workshop(s). In case of option 1, we would pre-emptively have to tell the funds we need to stay a few days longer than the actual conference, although it’s uncertain exactly what days in that case. With option 2, we expect it to overlap with the duration of the conference.

Hi Specify, We from the RBGE would prefer a two-day workshop after the conference. It will allow us to maximise our flight/carbon miles and avoid potentially missing other workshops within the conference.

But - Content is King - as we would be keen to participate in a workshop on system processes, usage issues etc.

Both options sound great. Could you tell us more about what would be covered in a two-day workshop?

The exact topics are still being decided with input from the community. We plan for the workshop to be more advanced topics, aimed at people who are already using Specify and are looking at the more advanced features Specify has to offer. It is likely we will go more in depth in Collection Object Group implementation and Collection Object Type options, as those will be relatively new features and we have received interest in finding out more details. But if there is anything you would like to be covered, we can add it to the plan.

Hi, A hands-on workshop on accessing and utilizing Specify 7’s (SP-7) API with practical, real-world basic examples using various tools (e.g., Postman, Node.js, Python, NGINX, etc.) would be highly valuable. Additionally, a hands-on workshop on SP-7 and GBIF integration—exploring the entire data flow, from configuring and exporting data through the Workbench to importing it into a GBIF node—would be extremely beneficial.

PS. A Two-Day Workshop would be great!
