Global Reports & Labels

At our institution (NHMD) we just harmonized the loan form so that it is the same for every discipline. This involved copying the same report template across all disciplines. This is doable, of course, even with a dozen disciplines, but I was wondering if a single report template could be accessed across the entire institution. So I uploaded it to the root of the resource tree, but it does not show up under reports anywhere even after logging out and in again.

Hi @fedoras,

This is likely because report and label resources are related to a query, and both of those belong to an Agent, none of which are scoped beyond a Division. I’m not sure which is the primary constraining factor, but one or more of those would explain why global reports aren’t supported at this time.

This is at least partly related to #8199, though a new feature request may also be warranted. I will follow up on that next week. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Did you mean user or agent? I am asking, because this ties in with a bigger question of why aren’t agents shared institution-wide in the first place.

Agents are scoped to the division, but they can be functionally institution-wide if the database has all disciplines/collections under one division. That scenario would mean that Accessions, Repository Agreements, and Exchanges In/Out are also global, though. See Instituional Scopings: Table Scoping Hierarchy.

Moreover, if a new division is added, institution admin users are handled by having their agent records cloned in the new division.

Also, I just learned that adding support for global reports isn’t really feasible because different trees above the discipline level are hard-coded in the report.

Let me know of any further questions about scoping or reports!
